Confidence~ Renee Arnold

These days, being confident in yourself and your abilities is a gift. The world tries to tear us down at every turn telling us that we are not good enough, smart enough, pretty enough or talented enough. It is important to find an area of your life in which you are sure in your abilities whether it be a sport, school subject or area of service in which you participate in.

However, confidence can have its downfalls. For example, if you put all of your self worth into a talent and an injury occurs and you can't participate in the season, what do you have to fall back on? And if you base your confidence in a boyfriend and you break up, you are going to be an emotional wreck because you are going to feel like you have nothing left.

You never have any need to feel hopeless or worthless because you have God on your side. Although God takes pride in your gifts just like you, he yearns for you to have a deep rooted confidence, a kind based in your faith that won't waver based on circumstances.

Stewarship Part 3~ Heather Young

Last but definitely not least, Part 3 will discuss how to be good stewards of others. This requires love, service, and sacrifice. In John chapter 3 verse 34, Jesus said to His disciples, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” You see, the disciples knew the Ten Commandments presented in the Old Testament to Moses, but in this passage Jesus gave them another law to add to those. He also made it clear that we are to care for “the least of these”:
“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’
Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
Matthew 25:31-46
“Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed.”
Psalm 82:3
It is extremely vital to care for those in need. If we don’t we will not only be sent to eternal punishment, but we also would never get to experience the joy obtained when serving others. God has given each of us gifts that He wants us to use to serve Him. By sacrificing our time for others’ needs, we are obeying one of God’s most important commandments: to “love your neighbor as yourself.”

“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms.”
1 Peter 4:10

Ways to Let Your Light Shine~ Heather Young

No matter where you are; at school, at home, or at work, there are always opportunities to share the Good News of Jesus with people. Be bold in your faith, and great things can happen. Luis Palau, a renowned evangelist, said, “It's very convenient to make excuses for not persuading others to follow Christ. We may say we don't want to be overbearing or offensive. We may think we can't possibly witness to someone because he or she will become angry. But over the years I have learned that some of the people I thought would be most closed to the Gospel often are the most receptive. Although they may outwardly fear it, in their hearts they welcome the message of the Gospel.” To read the rest of his article, “Telling Others the Gospel, Even When It’s Difficult,” click here.
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.”
Romans 1:16
“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”
Psalm 27:1
Here are seven ways you can show others Jesus, whether through your actions or words:
1. Keep God on your mind all day
Practicing this has been a huge help for me. When I think about God throughout my day, I find it hard to get bombarded with the busyness of life. Just be sure not to miss important information in school!
2. Think, “What Would Jesus Do?”
In any situation, if you think, “WWJD?” you will most likely make the right decision. Although many positions you are in may not directly match up with an answer from the Bible, you can usually figure out how Jesus would respond. For example, if someone asked you, “Why is it wrong to smoke?” A verse you could direct them to is 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.”
3. Talk to people everyone else ignores or puts down
When you talk with people who no one seems to love, it has a great impact on not only their life, but also others’. If you are sensitive to someone, they may share their story with you. They might even say, “Why are you doing this?” which would be a perfect opportunity to share the Gospel with them. A verse that came to mind when I thought of this subject was Psalm 82:3, “Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed.”
4. Be kind to others – even those who are hard to get along with
This one kind of goes along with number three. You know those few kids in your class who make fun of your friend’s outfit every day? Or what about your parent who is always telling you to do chores? And yes, even your bossy boss needs a dose of loving kindness.
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.”
John 13:34
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
Ephesians 4:29
5. Wear shirts with positive messages
I have had great success in this method of shining Jesus’ light. Over the years, I have received many compliments on my shirts. I would recommend checking out http://kerusso.com because it has a lot of cool designs with positive messages.
6. Don’t cuss
The third commandment is “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain” (Deuteronomy 5:11). That means not flippantly using His name. I hear a lot of people these days say, “Oh my ***,” without even thinking about it. But it’s against God’s law! Christians especially should not cuss in any way, because as James said:
“With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.”
James 3:9-12
7. Have a joyful attitude

Recently I heard a message by Francis Chan that really stuck with me. Using the example of the show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, he explained how others should see God through us. If you haven’t seen the show, I will briefly illustrate it. Basically, a family in need gets their house demolished and a new one rebuilt over the course of a week while they are away at Disneyland or some fun place like that. The whole show boils down to three words, “Move that bus!” But when the family arrives home from their trip and yells those three words, the camera doesn’t shift from their faces to the amazing new house. Instead, the camera stays focused on their faces, so we see how great the house is just from the gratitude and awe radiating off their faces. Similarly, when others look at us, they should see God shining from our faces – even if they are not looking directly at God.
“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
Galatians 1:10

Quickly Fading~ Hogan Stevens

Our lives here on earth are as passing as a thought. We are here one moment and then gone the next, passing away like leaves in autumn. To God, the time we spend here below is just a blink in eternity. To Him, time has no limits.

"Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever...No one remembers the former generations, and even those yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow them." (Ecc. 1:4, 11 NIV)

There are so many people in this world we live in, so many lives stretched across the centuries...So many lives lost from day to day. With all of the chaos, all of the confusion, one can't help but sometimes wonder if there is anyone out there that really cares. Is there? Is there truly someone that cares for each individual, who knows each and every person on this earth by name and loves them?

Yes, there is. And His name is God. His name is Jesus. Abba, Jehovah, Elohim, Yahweh. In all of His splendor and grace, He cares. He listens.

I know it may sometimes seem like God does not have the time to listen to each and every one of His children here on earth. I mean, there are billions of people, so many that it is sort of hard to think that the Lord truly sees and cares for each and every person. Sometimes, you may find yourself thinking that you are too insignificant for God to care about you. "God is only concerned about important people...Why would He want me, when I'm just....me? I don't do anything special; I'm not strong enough, not smart enough..."

David was a shepherd boy.

Moses was a murderer.

Ruth was simply a widow.

Saul persecuted God's people.

Throughout the Bible, God has demonstrated His love for each and every person. It doesn't matter who you are, just as long as you love God and want to serve Him. David? He slew a giant that no one else dared approach, and later became a great king beloved by the Lord. Moses was chosen by God to lead the Jews out of captivity. That widow Ruth wasn't overlooked, either. Ever trusting in God, she found a new husband--and life. And Saul? Even though he continually persecuted Christians after Jesus' ascension, as soon as God called to him he turned from his terrible ways and became one of the best missionaries in recorded history!
Believe me, God has a plan for you. However short this life is, however insignificant you think you are...the Lord still loves you, and He wants you to lead a fruitful, faith-filled life. It may not be the easiest life. You will encounter storms along the way and you might even forget again that God is always right there beside you. It may be hard to see His hand in your life, but always remember this: You are a princess of the king! You are His, and He is yours! He is the Good Shepherd, the loving master, and He will never--never--leave you in this world alone to deal with life yourself.

Never.

"For I know the plans I have for you," says the Lord. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. (Jer. 29:11 NLT)

Just as a good father watches over his children most lovingly, God will never abandon you. To Him, you are worth it all.

For great is His love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Praise the LORD. (Psalm 117:2)

Single on a Couples Holiday~ Nataleigh Robinson

Hearts and flowers and candies…Oh My!  If you’re anything like me Valentine’s Day is not a day that produces tingly feelings and butterflies in the stomach.  In fact it probably produces feelings of loneliness and a deep longing to have that special someone at our side.  For many girls that deep longing can turn into such desperation that you’ll do practically anything to get a date for just that one day.  But I have news for you…it is very possible to be single on Valentine’s Day and still have fun.  Let me repeat that: You do NOT have to have a boyfriend on Valentine’s Day to have something to celebrate.

Still I know how difficult it can be hard not to feel down about not having someone special when all your friends are celebrating the night with a candle light dinner at a fancy restaurant.  Fear not there is hope and with a little work you can still have a great Valentine’s day.  So here are 10 tips to make the best of your holiday.

1. First off, DO NOT define yourself by your relationship status. You should never identify yourself by whether or not you are in a relationship.  When you find yourself wishing you had someone this holiday just remember that it’s better to be single than to be in a bad relationship.

2. What better time than Valentine’s Day to start thinking about the qualities you want in your future husband.  Take some time to write a list of all the things that you really want in the man you marry, don’t be afraid to put down qualities such as “has a good smile” or “plays sports” but be sure to put down qualities such as “puts God above all” and “respects authority”  Then take some time to pray over your list and ask God to keep your future husband pure until the day that you are brought together.

3.  Since you’re already thinking about your future husband, why not spend some time thinking about the future you.  Think about the type of wife you want to be and start working on becoming the person your dream partner would fall in love with.  Start preparing now to be the wife God wants you to be so that you’ll be ready when Mr. Right comes along.

4. Plan well in advance to do something that will not place you in the path of all those cooing couples. Even if you usually enjoy eating out by yourself or you think it would be fun to go and see that movie you’ve been dying to see, think about how you’ll feel when you’re sitting there alone watching all those couples making kissy faces at each other.  Trust me it’s not worth the torture.

5. Do something special for yourself.  Go on a shopping spree and get yourself something new to wear to school that day.  Dress up and look your best.  If you feel good you’ll be more confident and you’ll find it harder to let your mind slip into the insecure thoughts that threaten to make you feel like you’re not good enough or like no guy could ever love you.  Cause I can tell you that those are just lies from the Devil who hates when you feel secure with who you are and loves making God’s creation doubt itself.

6. Try to resist the temptation to comfort eat.  If you feel the need to stuff yourself full of ice cream and cookies and chips than you’ll only feel worse about yourself in the end when you gain a pound or two.  You’ll feel much better about yourself if you treat your body right.

7. Get out and enjoy nature.  Valentine’s Day is my favorite day to go for a long walk and spend time in God’s presence.  Take some time to enjoy God’s creation.  Whether there’s still snow on the ground or the grass is just starting to peak through take a moment to breathe the fresh air and thank God for being Valentine

8. Have a single’s party.  Invite a bunch of your girl friends over to celebrate being single together.  Set up your own candle light dinner and rent a comedy and just have fun laughing together and building relationships that are deeper than just a quick fling.  Maybe you even want to take some time to write out the perfect husband list from #2 together

9. Volunteer somewhere.  According to 1 Corinthians chapter 13 there is much more to love than just pretty flowers and romantic feelings.  Maybe you would rather spend your Valentine’s Day showing true love to those who rarely get shown God’s love.  What better way to experience God's love than to share it with others

10. Be content and be thankful.  Remember that being single is a gift.  You more than likely won’t always be single and when you finally meet the perfect man, get married and start you’ll lives together you’ll start to realize all the things you can’t do now that you have another person to think about.  Make the most out of this time that you have, do the things that you’ve always wanted to do because this time won’t last forever.

Whatever you do this Valentine’s Day don’t let a couple-driven culture define your choice as something wrong. Be a trendsetter.  Enjoy being different.  Learn to be happy with yourself and avoid following the crowd.
