Summer Skin Care~ Renee Arnold

Hot and humid summer weather is very harsh on all types of skin. It is also very crucial to have a sunscreen convent in your moisturizer to protect your skin from the sun's ray's.

First, you want to make sure that your face lotion is not going to be heavy on your skin because that can be extremely uncomfortable. Look for moisturizers that are described as milks or lotions and try to avoid face moisturizers with petrolatum or dimethicone.

Next, you absolutely need to have a SPF in your face moisturizer regardless of where you are going. Even if you are not going to the beach or going to be in direct sunlight, you would be surprised how much the sun's rays can affect you skin. It is not necessary to have a SPF higher then 30 but have at least a 15.

I would recommend anything Neutrogena or Olay, if you have sensitive or oily skin, buy accordingly. Both of these brands are very affordable and can be found at any local drugstore or supermarket.

Protect you skin this summer and you will be much happier down the road when you have pretty, youthful skin that is free from sun spots and has fewer wrinkles then those who don't take care of their skin.

Polishes, Stick-On's and Tricks.. Oh My!~ Hogan Stevens

Do you love painting your nails and designing them in the most beautiful/unusual designs you can think of? Well, I do! And if you're like me, then you're always looking for new things to try out. And here's the best thing: My mom's a beautician, so I have a few good ideas. ;)

The secrets I am about to share with you--Okay, okay. They're not really secrets. They're quickly becoming quite popular, actually.

Crackle
I'll start out with the more well-known of the newer polishes, Crackle. It gives any plain coat of polish a creative, edgy look. Simply paint on a single layer of Crackle over a dry coat of any color paint, and voila! It instantly crackles into a shattered design! Very different, and very pretty.

Design fx Bling
I'm sure there are many brands of this nail stick-on, but Designfx has been the only one I've used so far. It comes as strips in a package, which you peel off and carefully place onto your nail. After it's positioned on the nail the way you think looks best, you simply file off the excess on the end. In the end, it looks like a really detailed paint job, while all you had to do was peel and stick!

Newspaper Design
This design is less costly than the previous two. In fact, all you need is some alcohol and a strip of newspaper! First, paint your nail any color you wish (probably a lighter color, though, so the lettering can be easily seen). After the polish is dry, dip your nail in any kind of alcohol, and then press a strip of newspaper over your still-wet nail! Make sure to pull the newspaper off slowly, and then there you go! An easy, very cute, nail design.

A Word From the Wide (The Wise Being God)~ Nadia

Dear Nadia,

What is God's definition of beautiful?

~ Curious

Dear Curious,
1 Samuel 16:7 says: “The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” God doesn't base beauty on what our face or our body looks like – His definition of beauty is based on what our heart looks like. We can get a good idea of what God considers beautiful by looking at Proverbs 31. A beautiful, godly woman:
  • Brings good, not harm to others: a godly girl will encourage and lift others up; she will not gossip. She is thoughtful and puts others first.
  • Works with eager hands/sets about her work vigorously: a godly girl does not complain, but serves diligently – happy to do the work God has set before her (check out Ephesians 6:7).
  • She considers a field and buys it: this verse is basically saying that a godly girl thinks before she acts and is a good steward of what she has (including money).
  • Her arms are strong for her tasks: a godly girl will seek to strengthen and develop herself – physically, mentally, and spiritually. She will strive to do her best in everything.
  • She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy: a godly girl is humble and quick to serve others – especially those in need. She gives generously and selflessly.
  • She is clothed with strength and dignity: To be clothed is an analogy for completely covering yourself. Basically, all a godly girl does will reflect the strength and dignity of her character.
  • She can laugh at days to come: a godly girl trusts in God. She is not worried about the future because her life is in God's hands (see Proverbs 3:5-6).
  • She speaks with wisdom: a godly girl knows the truth of God's Word and speaks it.
Bottom line? Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised” (Proverbs 31:30).

Popular Spring Hairstyles~ Renee Arnold

With spring peeking around the corner, it's time to investigate how you want to style your hair for the end of your school year!
This year, long and bouncy hair is making a comeback. Unlike the past year where poker straight hair was coveted, this elegant yet relaxed look is all over the runways this spring. This style is perfect for long wavy or straight hair and can be easily accomlished using a curler.
brigitte bardot hairAlso on the list for 2012 spring is the half-up Brigitte Bardot hairstlye. Although most of you are probably really confused as to what this looks like, you will recognize it as a very basic hairstyle. All you do to get your hair to look like this is flip your hair upside down and gather the sides of your hair, flip your hair back up and clip the little ponytail you've created using a jaw clip or basic hairtie.
Lastly, if you want to cut your hair short and keep it managable this spring, the mod bob is short, voluminous, messy yet very cute looking. This look was very popular in the 1960's and was seen on plently of celebrities of that time like Brigitte Bardot and Twiggy.
I hope this article was very helpful if you were looking for a change-up this month, or if you were thinking of leaving your hair the same, maybe this inspired you to try something new!
Hope a great spring season,
Renee

Overnight Curls~ No Heat! by Grace from Mod Style Lounge

I love the all natural curls/wave look and I've been experimenting with my hair for a few months, trying to find a way to achieve it. I try to avoid heat on my hair everyday. For one, it dries it out terribly, especially in the winter, and curling my hair with a curling iron takes quite a bit of time, longer than I'd like to spend on my hair everyday.
After watching numerous YouTube tutorials, I finally came up with something that worked for me! It's super easy, quick, and no damaging heat!

1. Wash your hair before bed.

2. After you've towel dried your hair and while it's still damp, but not dripping anymore, spray all over with non-frizz spray (if you hair is prone to frizzieness. I use Dream Curls Curl-Perfecting Spray.)

3. Divide hair into two even sections (it doesn't have to be perfect) halfway up your head about where you would do a high ponytail.

4. Twist the two sections together tightly (but not too tight, wet hair is delicate!) like a rope and then twist into a bun and tie with a hair elastic. You should now have a tight bun. If it's pulling or uncomfortable in some places you may want to add another hair elastic or pin it with some bobby pins. Don't worry if it looks messy, no one will you see you, just make sure it won't fall out.

5. Go to bed, sweet dreams!

6. Once you've woken up, take out the bun. Your hair may still be a bit damp, but now you have pretty waves/curls! Finger comb them out, but do not use a brush it will make your hair frizzy!
7. Put on a headband, pin back your bangs, pull it back in a half ponytail, or add a pretty clip! I sometimes spritz a little hair spray to hold the style.

There you have it! Enjoy your pretty no heat curls! :)

Have a great day!

A Positive Body Image~ Renee Arnold

Posters, magazines and music video's, everywhere we look we see photo shopped bodies that are tan and toned. Exercise DVD's and diet pills promise us amazing weight loss and a bikini ready bod in time for summer. All this bombardment can make you feel drained and just plain not good enough.

You're not alone, I guarantee you that every girl at one time or another has wanted to change something about her body. Even celebrity's have set standards that they can't even live up to, why do you think they spend thousands of dollars on stylists and personal trainers. They're not perfect either!!!!

I encourage you to take your problems to Jesus, ask him to guard your heart from Satan's lies that you will never be good enough. Look to role models in your life that encourage healthy habits and maintain a healthy weight, maybe a mom, aunt or youth group leader. Make sure that you are eating and exercising but that you don't become obsessed with calories or fat content in food.

If you are concerned about your weight, talk to your Doctor, they can let you know if you really need to lose weight and what the healthiest way to go about that it.

Don't fall into the trap of never feeling satisfied, you are beautiful to God and at the end of the day, isn't that who we really want to impress?

What Do You Do For Your Do? ~ Haylie Gregory

If I went rummaging through your bathroom cabinets would I find it full of hair products or full of dust and cobwebs? If you went through mine you’d most likely find both! Many bottles are covered in dust with only a little bit of product used while others I am scrapping the sides trying to get every bit I can.

If you have a cabinet like mine, you are a product junky. You’ve tried many products and you know what you like. I want to encourage each one of you to not be afraid to try new products! But before you go out and fill your shopping cart full of hair products, I want to share with you what each product does.

Mousse: Mousse is one of the most versatile products out there. Its primary purpose is to add volume and hold, but it can also fight frizz, add shine, fatten up fine hair and define curls. Mousse is great to use for those special occasion do’s. It will keep your hair looking elegant all night long. I highly suggest you use mousse for hold if the smell of hairspray bothers you.

Hairspray: Hairsprays main purpose is to provide hold, but each hairspray can provide a different kind of hold. Some can give you a natural, lightweight hold while others can give you a rock hard hold! Lightweight hairsprays are wonderful at fighting frizz and making blow dried hair smooth and soft. Firm holds are good for keeping those up dos in place.

Shine Spray: Shine spray is a finishing product that gives you a nice, shiny polished finish to your hair. It can also control frizz and flyaways. It is ideal for those special occasions do’s.

Thickening Lotion: Thickening lotion is known as the alternative to mousse. This can build body and volume and also add texture to your hair for a fuller look. Some often have treatment properties that can boost strength and condition your hair! Unlike mousse, they do not give you as much texture or hold, but it does give you much more softness and flexibility which is a major plus!

Dry Shampoo: Dry shampoo is primarily used to freshen up dirty hair between washes. It also creates volume at your roots, gives your hair a messy, matte look and makes freshly washed hair easier to style. It is fantastic for those who want their styled hair to last more than one day.

Gel: Gel is ideal for girls with naturally curly hair. It defines curls and tames frizz. It is also great to keep short looks in place if it is stronger hold. You can get it in a cream or lightweight formulas. Gel will give your hair a wet look if you do not blow dry it.

Serum: Serum is superb at achieving a sleek, high shine finish. It can also be used to control frizz and flyaways, define curls and increase impact on a straightened do. It is also useful for protecting your hair from hair damage though I suggest you only use it when you are out of heat protector.

Texturizing Products: This category includes pastes, putties, clays, muds and waxes which are all top notch for short cuts/styles. They are used in the final stages of styling hair to create texture, define random ends, create a piece/ separated effect, add polish and shine or create a matte, messy effect.

Creams, Lotions and Balms:  These are the go-to products when waxes, pastes and putties are too heavy for the longer hair. They are used to define ends and create texture and separation they also can define curls and add softness and shine! Some can even help hydrate your hair. (Bonus!)

Thermal Protectors: Thermal Protectors are a must-have for every girl who applies heat to her hair. They protect your hair from the heat damage causes by styling your hair with heated tools. A really good thermal protector also helps protect your hair from sun damage.

As you can see, there are many styling products you can us on your hair, but here’s the main question: where are you going to start?

Defeat Dry Skin!~ Renee Arnold

Do you have dry, flaky skin? If you do, do you know there are easy and effective ways to minimize the itchiness and self-consciousness?
First, you can use lukewarm water to shower, not hot water. Hot water robs your skin of needed nutrients, thus making it dry. Limit your showers to once a day and don't take baths because that is even worse for your skin, no matter how soothing it may be.
Secondly, always, always moisturize everywhere! Any time you wash your skin, including your hands you need to restore moisture to your skin by applying lotion. If your skin is dry, stay away from fancy scented lotions and use a St. Ives or Aveeno instead. Same goes with body wash. Make sure that it is for sensitive skin and stay away from bath gel.
Thirdly, instead of slathering your lips with lip gloss or lipstick in the morning, use lip balm. If you find the right lip balm it will not only keep your lips super soft, it will also give your lips the shimmery glow that gloss does.
Did you know that cup of coffee in the morning is dehydrating your body? Yes, caffeine acts as a diuretic that will suck your body dry of water. If you are thinking that you can't live without your coffee because you will be too tired, try having an apple in the morning! Apples actually give you more energy than a cup of coffee!
Lastly, incorporate omega-3's in your daily diet. Foods like cold-water fish, walnuts and flax seeds are guaranteed to replace moisture in your skin and hair.
Follow all these tips and you will be well on your way to having soft skin that you will absolutely love!

Makeup~ A Beauty Article by Renee Arnold

I obviously love the Exact Eyelights collection by CoverGirl but I already wrote about those! My favorite mascara is Maybelline Great Lash Mascara in very black. This mascara is the ultimate black mascara, it lengthens and volumizes your lashes all in one very affordable mascara.

For a lip gloss to use of special occasions, I use Classic Lip Gloss with TimeStrip Technology from Cargo Cosmetics, it's rather pricey at $22 but it's a fabulous lip gloss! I actually bought it as part of a complete Cargo Cosmetics kit so I didn't pay normal price.

My very favorite blush can be bought at Wal-Mart or any drugstore for only $5! It is called Rimmel Lasting Finish Blendable Blush. This blush is well blendable so it doesn't give you harsh lines of color on your face so you can look more natural.

Pursuing a Modest Wardrobe~ A Beauty Article by Madeline Hunt

This culture has most people thinking “I need this or that to be ‘in style.’ ” Because we live in a culture of immodesty it is very easy to fall into habits of dressing immodestly, being flirtatious, and trying to catch guy's eyes. But we don’t need to dress immodesty to be stylish. There are many items that are modest or with layering can be modest. Cute modest clothes are out there you may just have to spend more time looking and possibly more money. If you want to be modest, cute and economical I suggest checking out consignment stores or thrift stores.

Shopping can be a challenge even at consignment/thrift stores, when trying on an article of clothing ask yourself these questions:
  • Would I want Jesus or my future husband seeing me wearing this?
  • Will I be self-conscious or constantly worrying that I am showing too much?
  • Will it draw attention to my face, not my body?
  • Is it comfortable and suitable for the activity/event I’ll wear it for?
  • Would my parents approve of it?

For the clothes you already own, I suggest that you regularly do a Modesty Check. Do this with a like minded friend or family member. Try on your clothes and have your friend or family member give you their honest opinion.  Is the item modest? Put it back in your closet.  Is the item so-so?  Put in a to-be-decided pile.  Is the item immodest in any way?  Give it away, or sell it to a consignment store.  (Any money you earn could be used to buy modest clothes)  Go through the “to-be-decided” pile with your Dad or brother. Don’t justify keeping clothes if your friend or family member says it’s immodest.
Every time you put a shirt back on the shelf at a store or give away a less-than-modest item, you are showing love to your brothers-in-Christ.

Please don’t think that I am not tempted to dress immodestly–I am!  (and sometimes I give in) “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23

But we are also given a way to say “no” to any temptation including immodesty. 1 Corinthians 10:13 “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man and God is faithful he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear but when you are tempted he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”

Let me encourage you to pursue a modest, feminine, and fashionable wardrobe!

Tips On How to Look Your Best Christmas Morning~ A Fashion Article by Haylie Gregory

Cameras are everywhere during the Christmas holiday. From plays to productions, from dinners to Christmas morning, cameras are going to be around. For me, Christmas morning starts early. The earlier we get up and ready, the longer the Christmas magic lasts, even without the snow most of you get. (Downfall to living in Florida) My morning are rushed, but I don't want to look bad in the pictures! I hate looking at pictures from Christmases past and seeing my nappy hair and non-matching Pj's. I'm going to share some tips I've learned that will help you look your best in a snap on Christmas morning.

When you wake up in the morning, is your hair a fizzy mess? A rat's nest? A disaster? Here are some ideas to help you overcome that.

~French braid your hair the night before. When you wake up Christmas morning, take the braids out and run your fingers through it gently. If you want, you can spritz some hairspray in it to make sure you keep the curls. you can even leave the braids in and take them out later.

~ Wash and straighten your hair the night before. When you wake up the nest morning, go over the messed up pieces with your flat iron. It'll look like you just did it.

~ Curl your hair Christmas Eve. Before you go to bed, put your hair up in a high ponytail and try not to squish your curls when you sleep (Example: When you lay on your pillow, throw your ponytail over your head so you don't sleep on it.) When you wake up the next morning, just take it down and tame the little bit a frizz it might have. You can either curl some of the pieces that might of messed up, let it down and leave it, or pull it back up in the ponytail, after you tame the frizz of course. Either way, you got some curly volume!

Makeup makeup makeup! Some girls wear a lot, some girls wear a little and some girl wear none. For those who wear makeup, here are a few ways to look like you just woke up that way!

~ Put a little bit of pressed powder or foundation on any red spots you see. If you broke out all over, put on your regular amount.

~ Put a small amount of mascara on your upper lashes. This makes them look long, but not too long.

~ If you want to add a  little more pop, add a little bit of eyeshadow on. I suggest wearing a light color that complements your eye color. For example, I have hazel eyes, so I will most likely wear a light green or light brown.

Before going to bed, think, "Will I be embarrassed to look back at these pictures a year from now?"

~ Wear your favorite pair of Pj's!

~ Make sure your Pj's match!

~If you have Christmas Pj's, wear them!

~Git slipper? Wear those too!

Have fun Christmas morning! Walk out of your bedroom and make your family wonder if you always look that good when you wake up! You girls are all beautiful, inside and out! Have a Merry Christmas!

New Hair for a New (Looking) You!~ A Beauty Article by Madeline Hunt

Changing your hair routine is not hard but can take a little extra work. A new hairstyle can brighten any outfit, while having the same one everyday is boring.  Taking good care of your hair is a must since healthy hair is the foundation for every hairstyle.

Unless you have really oily hair, don’t wash your hair every day. If you are a curly girly like me my stylist recommends washing only once to twice a week. For you curly girls who are thinking Yuck! My hair would be so gross if I only washed it once or twice a week. Believe me I was skeptical at first but my hair looks a lot better, and I still shower and rinse my hair everyday so my products to get washed out on a daily basis.

There are many simple hairstyles you can try to change up your look. Here are some ideas you could try.

Braids

  • Try a mini braid starting at your part. ( French looks best but normal braid work as well)
  • Try a French braid in the back or one on the side. If you don’t know how to French braid, look up videos on you tube on how to french braid.
  • Loose low pigtail braids are really cute and simple.
This picture is an example of a type of french braid you can do. This one is a long, loose french braid.

Ponytails

  • Curly ponys are super cute! If you don’t have naturally curly hair, curl your hair after you put it up
  • Try a half up pony. This style looks good with all hair types, though it is easier to do with straight hair

.

Buns
  • A loose messy bun on the middle of the back of your head is so cute and perfect for when you’re having a not so good hair day. If you can’t get it to stay with just bobby pins try putting it up when your hair is slightly damp.
  • A polished low side bun is a great style for going out.

Tips and Tricks

  • Try headbands, bows and clips to add extra flair to your style.
  • Just before you get out of the shower rinse your hair with cold water- this makes it shiny.
  • Use serum to smooth frizz and create a polished look. (This can be purchased at your local drugstore)
  • Don’t straighten, curl, or blow-dry your hair every day if you can help it.
  • Have fun creating a fabulously, fun new look!

Hair Care Tips!~ A Beauty Article by Renee Arnold

Hair care is very, very important. Whether our hair is long or short, blond or brunette, thick or thin it needs care. In this article I'm going to give you some great advice on how to make your hair look and feel it's best.
First, figuring out whether or not to let our hair air dry or blow dry it. Air drying is very easy if your hair is short or curly. Blow drying is obviously a very nice convenience if you have long or very thick hair. Excessive blow drying can make your hair brittle and dried out especially if it's straight and thin. Blow drying is okay if you're in a rush but make sure to blot it out with a towel first. Use some heat protecting spray before you blow dry. it protects it from the heat and leaves it feeling smooth. Blow dry about six inches from your head and move the dryer all around your head. Towel drying is the best if you have really dry hair, but if you follow the tips above, blow drying will be okay.
Second is how to take care of annoying oil that can ruin a beautiful hair style. First, wash your hair as often as you need to in order to keep your hair clean and fresh. Also, remember to only put conditioner at the ends of your hair and not your scalp. Try to limit oils in your diet, now please don't go crazy but you would be surprised how much that helps. If you need a quick fix, rub some talcum powder into your roots when your hair is dry and wash it out later. Do not brush your hair to much. This releases the oils in your scalp. Lastly, maybe it's as simple as changing shampoo's, ask a hairdresser or stylist to see what they recommend.
Last but not least, we all know the damage that straighteners can do to our locks. Here is some helpful insight that will minimize damage and maximize results. Number one, condition your hair often, this will help keep it smooth and healthy. Secondly, use products specially made for your hair type, it makes a bigger difference than you realize. Next, say "adios" to split ends by having them removed every 2-3 months to keep your hair looking perfect. Lastly, give your hair a break every once in a while so that you're not frying it every singe day.
So, I hope all these tips make you and your hair happier! If you are having a real problem with your hair don't try and fix it yourself, ask a professional! Have a great day!
